One of the most important books for the environmentalist movement. Rachel Carson bravely fought against big business and accepted industrial practices in America by conducting her own investigations, and raising awareness about the devastating effects of chemicals, pesticides and Government policy upon the environment. It is no understatement that the work of Rachel Carson helped to avert catastrophic environmental collapse
A Blue New Deal - Chris Armstrong
A Blue New Deal explores the often overlooked politics and economics surrounding our oceans. It highlights the often lack of any rules, how existing protections are actively abused, causing harm to both the humans that work around the world's oceans, as well as the maritime life that call them home. For me, there were alarming sections of the book that demonstrated the urgent need to fix the abuses of power committed by businesses while at sea, and the scale of harm caused to sea-life. The book also makes the case for granting rights to Cetaceans, and hopes that this can be the starting point of improving the health, respect, and protection towards the ocean's diverse ecosystems.
The Shock Doctrine - Naomi Klein
This is a powerful work by the acclaimed author Naomi Klein. It is written clearly, accessible for most audiences, and profoundly useful for activists that are interested in economic and environmental injustice. The book has a great global scope, looking at how climate related disasters are often exploited in recovery programmes to displace indigenous communities, both in the Global South and also at the heart of the West as well. The book also explores the history of socialist Governments in Latin America were sabotaged by American interventions which often promoted authoritarianism in the affected countries, resulting in unnecessary suffering and persecution of politically prominent individuals.
Worth Fighting For - Jenni Neasden & Natalia Szarek
The Rojava Revolution is a powerful example of resistance and organisation in the heart of the Middle East. The book explores the experiences of two volunteers (also the authors of the book), what drew them to the movement in Rojava, and how it relates back to an international, and intersectional movement that unites gender equality, economic injustices, direct democracy, all while fighting a war on two fronts against religious extremism, and looming imperialism that threatens the movement. This story/perspective of the Rojava Revolution is a great starting point for those wanting to look into progressive movements in the Middle East, and how to build movements across disparate groups
Technofeudalism - Yanis Varoufakis
Technofeudalism is an essential and emotional analysis of the world that the book's author believes we are headed towards. In the Marxist tradition, there is the classic sense of Historical Materialism that is our general theory of change. This book navigates the severe emotional and ideological dislocation that is such a central feature of the strange times of the post financial crisis world. It is written as a letter to the author's late father and it is our view that such a perspective really drives home the emotional urgency that is so sorely needed, and so sorely lacking amidst the polar opposites of an ever-numbing physical experience, that is so wildly juxtaposed by a vicious 24/7 news cycle that seems to invite cynical and hopeless perspectives. As always, knowledge is power, and any fear one may hold, materialising that fear is the first step to conquering it.
