Slient Spring - Rachel Carson

One of the most important books for the environmentalist movement. Rachel Carson bravely fought against big business and accepted industrial practices in America by conducting her own investigations, and raising awareness about the devastating effects of chemicals, pesticides and Government policy upon the environment. It is no understatement that the work of Rachel Carson helped to avert catastrophic environmental collapse

A Blue New Deal - Chris Armstrong

A Blue New Deal explores the often overlooked politics and economics surrounding our oceans. It highlights the often lack of any rules, how existing protections are actively abused, causing harm to both the humans that work around the world's oceans, as well as the maritime life that call them home. For me, there were alarming sections of the book that demonstrated the urgent need to fix the abuses of power committed by businesses while at sea, and the scale of harm caused to sea-life. The book also makes the case for granting rights to Cetaceans, and hopes that this can be the starting point of improving the health, respect, and protection towards the ocean's diverse ecosystems.

The Shock Doctrine - Naomi Klein

This is a powerful work by the acclaimed author Naomi Klein. It is written clearly, accessible for most audiences, and profoundly useful for activists that are interested in economic and environmental injustice. The book has a great global scope, looking at how climate related disasters are often exploited in recovery programmes to displace indigenous communities, both in the Global South and also at the heart of the West as well. The book also explores the history of socialist Governments in Latin America were sabotaged by American interventions which often promoted authoritarianism in the affected countries, resulting in unnecessary suffering and persecution of politically prominent individuals.
